Steve Markovich and his wife, Kathy, live in Tartan Fields, where they raised their three sons: Andrew, Alex, and Ian. The couple moved to Tartan Fields in January 2000, becoming one of the first families to build a home in the neighborhood. Steve is originally from Detroit and graduated from the University of Michigan. He was stationed numerous times in Dayton, where he met Kathy.
Steve served for 38 years between active duty and the National Guard. He spent his first four years as a biomedical engineer at the largest research facility for the Air Force in Dayton before becoming a pilot for the remainder of his active duty, flying the A-7 and F-16. After more than two decades of flying, Steve served at the National Guard headquarters as the Air Surgeon, Chief of Staff, and Air Guard Commander as a Major General.
Steve pursued graduate school at Wright State University and medical school at The Ohio State University, completing his medical residency at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, where he trained as a family physician. Steve eventually worked his way up to becoming the President and Chief Executive Officer of OhioHealth.
The Markovich family is very involved in sports and loves adventuring outdoors. They enjoy playing golf and traveling through the United States and Europe. Their favorite destination is their vacation house in northern Michigan by the lake, which Steve describes as looking like it came straight out of a movie!
Steve has a border collie named Luca, who is one of the smartest dogs you would ever meet. Luca can even amaze you by responding to English phrases such as “take a bath” or “chase a duck!”
Steve underscored that one must be disciplined to become a pilot because the job is entirely about precision and attention to detail. He compared the National Guard to his CEO role at OhioHealth because both require working with thousands of people to achieve a common goal.
Steve stays involved with the military as a retiree while supporting active duty members. He flew for a flight honoring hundreds of veterans which was one of the most rewarding things he has ever done.
Steve encourages families moving to the neighborhood to become involved in the community. Whether through the schools or the golf club, Steve urges neighbors to meet and learn from each other because of how deeply community has defined his career.
