A Local Tribute
Guilford County has unveiled a lasting tribute to its most remarkable native daughter as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary commemorations.
On May 20, leaders and community members gathered at the Guilford County Bicentennial Garden to honor Dolley Payne Madison. The ceremony marked both her 258th birthday and the start of local America 250 observances.
“Representing the Sedgefield Woman’s Club at this ceremony was both an honor and a reminder that local women have always played important roles in shaping our communities.”
— Sarah Burger, President of the Sedgefield Woman’s Club
Leading with Grace
Born here in 1768, Dolley Madison remains North Carolina’s only First Lady. She transformed the role through hospitality, using it to bridge deep political divides.
She is best known for her bravery during the War of 1812. Before British troops burned the White House, she famously saved Gilbert Stuart’s portrait of George Washington.
History Close to Home
“As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, I hope people remember that ordinary citizens can have an extraordinary impact.”
— Blair Kopf, Sedgefield Woman’s Club Executive Team
The new monument stands alongside memorials to Dr. George Simkins and Gertrude Weil. Together, they remind us that national history starts in our own neighborhoods.
