Ray and Vicky Velez are proof that sometimes the best chapters of life begin later than expected. After years of focusing on their individual careers, both found themselves single and encouraged by friends to try online dating. Taking that leap changed everything. They met, immediately connected, and soon realized they had found something special. Ray proposed in New York City in September 2010, and the two were married the following year in a ceremony in Williamsburg.

Their journey together is built on decades of experience, dedication, and adventure. Ray, originally from New York City, spent much of his youth near West Point before earning a track scholarship to the University of Montana. Following graduation, he entered the United States Army as an officer and served for 29 years. His career took him around the globe, including assignments in Germany, Belgium, and South Korea, as well as a combat tour in Panama. Along the way, he became an Army Ranger, master paratrooper, and free-fall parachutist. After retiring as a Colonel, Ray continued his service as a counterterrorism analyst with the FBI in Richmond.

Vicky’s path reflects a similar level of commitment and achievement. Raised in Virginia, she graduated as high school valedictorian before pursuing a career in nursing. She went on to earn advanced degrees at Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia to become a Nurse Anesthetist. Dedicating 42 years to patient care, she served her hospital department as a clinician, manager and educator, and joined other medical professionals on a surgical mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

Today, she channels her passion into community work as an active Master Gardener, contributing her time and expertise to local projects and events. She also enjoys a busy golf season with the LGA at Ford’s Colony, serving on and chairing tournament committees. She achieved the award of “Golfer of the Year” with the league in 2019.

Together, they have created a full and vibrant life in Ford’s Colony, where Ray has lived since 1999 and Vicky since 2011. Their home in St. Andrews Village offers not only beautiful surroundings but also a strong sense of connection. They describe their street as the best in the neighborhood, thanks to its welcoming neighbors and peaceful atmosphere that encourages relaxation and friendship.

Family remains central to their lives. Ray keeps up with his extended family on the West Coast, and became an instant Dad when he and Vicky married. Vicky’s two sons, Tyler and Jarrod, have built successful paths of their own. After college and law school, Tyler owns a food delivery service in Chicago’s “Loop.” Jarrod works in the pharmaceutical industry, and with his wife, is raising five-year-old twins. Time spent visiting family, whether in Chicago, Durham, or beyond, is deeply valued.

When they are at home, Ray and Vicky enjoy staying active and engaged. They are members of Ford’s Colony Country Club, where golf is a favorite pastime. Golfing led to many fun golf trips to beautiful places and meeting new and interesting people. Ray also enjoys cycling along the Capital Trail, while Vicky finds joy in gardening, visiting the historic Colonial Williamsburg area and delving into art museums. Their shared love of travel, food and wine has taken them across Europe and throughout the United States, with memorable trips to places like Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam and Sicily, among others.

Despite their many adventures, it is often the simplest moments that matter most. Evenings on their backyard patio, walks along neighborhood paths, and time spent with friends define their daily life. For Ray and Vicky, home is not just a place; it is a reflection of a life well lived and shared.
