Every Memorial Day weekend, something powerful happens at The Park at River Walk. And this year, as our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, that moment feels even more meaningful.

More than a thousand American flags will rise from the grass – each one a quiet reminder of courage, sacrifice, and service. Together, they create a moving tribute to the men and women who have given so much for our country … and for us.

This is Thousand Flags.

For over a decade, Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary has brought our community together to honor fallen and living veterans, active service members, first responders, and medical professionals – those who step forward when others step back.

But Thousand Flags is more than something you see.
It’s something you feel.
It’s the sound of flags gently moving in the breeze.
It’s a moment of stillness as you reflect on someone you love.
It’s standing shoulder to shoulder with neighbors who understand what this weekend truly means.

From Saturday through Memorial Day Monday, you’re invited to walk the fields of flags at your own pace, in your own way. Pause. Reflect. Take it in.

You can also honor someone special by dedicating a flag in their name – a tribute you can later take home as a lasting reminder.

Throughout the weekend, meaningful ceremonies will mark the occasion, including daily flag raisings and a special Memorial Day observance. The stirring sounds of live bagpipes will echo through the park, and on Monday, skydivers will descend from above in a breathtaking salute to our heroes.

There’s also a spirit of community woven throughout the weekend.

On Saturday evening, bring a blanket and enjoy a free, family-friendly concert on the lawn. Grab dinner from Salty’s BBQ, relax with friends, and take in a beautiful Bakersfield evening surrounded by the flags.

Sunday brings the Thousand Flags Fun Run and Memorial Walk – a 5K for runners and a 1-mile walk for those who want a more reflective way to participate. Whether you run, walk, or simply cheer from the sidelines, it’s a meaningful way to honor those who served. Sign up with the QR Code below.

On Monday, explore the Patriots Fair, where local veterans’ organizations will be on hand – sharing stories, resources, and ways to support those who have served our country.

And throughout it all, you’ll find food trucks, cold drinks, and plenty of ways to gather, connect, and enjoy the weekend with family and friends.

Behind the scenes, this event is powered by an incredible group of volunteers and supported by generous local sponsors – all coming together to make something truly special for our community. Proceeds help fund scholarships, support veterans, honor our first responders, and extend Rotary’s impact both locally and beyond.

This Memorial Day weekend, don’t just make plans.
Make meaning.
Come walk among the flags.
Come remember.
Come honor.

And most of all … come together.
